Create Alpha Channels on Graphics for Video

I'd say my most common use for Photoshop with video editing is using it to prepare graphics or logos for my timeline.  Just like anything else there are lots of ways to do this.  This method has worked many years for me regardless of system. Whenever I am given a graphic to insert into an editing timeline, it is important to first make sure the graphic is properly sized and cutout if necessary.  Once those steps are done, here is how I ensure the parts that should be transparent - are indeed transparent.

It is the process known as "creating an alpha channel".  Here is how you do it:

  • Command + click on the layer thumbnail of the logo or graphic that is cutout.

Go over to the channels pannel and at the bottom click - save selection as channel

  • This creates a new channel called "Alpha 1".

Now just save as at Tiff with Alpha checked and its ready for the video world.
