Multicam Tips & the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor

Syncing up a Multicam Clip to switch between angles with the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are my best tips for editing Multicam videos on the edit page in DaVinci Resolve 17.4

The DaVinci resolve speed editor is my favorite new editing tool, but so much of it was designed with the Cut Page in mind, that Blackmagic neglected to use the camera buttons for us traditional video editors that want to work in the Edit page and live switch our Multicam clips.

Well, they listened to us, and made the speed editor more versatile by giving us the ONE THING that so many of us hoped for when it launched - Edit Page Multicam support! Traditional Multicam’s are nested compound clips that let you get in the groove, so here’s how it all works.

Assign Metadata

  • Set Camera Numbers under Shot & Scene Metadata List

  • Drop Common Marker Points with the Bee and Pee Technique

  • Right-click to Create a New Multicam Clip using selected clips

    • Choose Marker

    • Angle Name - Metadata from Camera

    • Check box for detect clips using the same camera number

    • Uncheck move source clips into an original bin

  • Right-click to create a new timeline using selected clips

Edit Page Setup

  • Enable Dual Viewer Mode

  • Open Multicam viewer

    • assign shortcut key with keyboard customization (command shift m)

  • Choose more angles to display if necessary

Multi-Channel Audio (Adaptive Audio Tracks)

  • Choose the correct audio angle

  • Option Click - Flatten Multicam Clip (audio only)

  • Change Audio Track type to match the number in the source (4, for the Canon C200)

  • Right-click track header to “convert to linked group”

  • Fairlight menu to unlink the linked group

  • Link the audio and video back together for linked selection to work

Speed Editor Functionality

  • Open up the Multicam Viewer

  • Tap the cam button to cut to that angle

  • Double Tap the cam button to change to that angle without making a cut

  • Alternatively used the traditional keyboard number pad to cut or option number to change angles
